Frequently Asked Questions

What is an 8-point hat?

Also known as utility covers, 8-point hats are caps that are worn by the United States Marine Corps and some Naval units as part of their combat utility uniform.

Why are they called 8-point covers?

These utility covers get their name from their design. They have 8 distinct points on the head of the cap, which are typically ironed or starched to create a sharper, “blocked” appearance.

When were 8-point hats first worn?

Utility covers were first issued to US Marines during World War II, along with the Herringbone Twill utility uniform that was issued in 1943. They were based on an Army field cap design. 8-point hats were made with herringbone twill until 1959, when the material the caps were made with changed to cotton sateen.
