This is a great pack for day hikes, and the price is excellent! The "pencil case" pocket flap is handy for things like emergency poncho, pocket knife, notebook/pencil, lighter, etc., and the pouch pocket will hold a small water bottle and a day's worth of snacks, etc. The main pouch is roomy enough for a tarp or poncho, rain gear or a layer or two, and all the other stuff you may carry on a day hike, like a first aid kit, etc. The straps are not super padded, but as this really is a lightweight bag, they don't need to be; they are also not adjustable, which means you set the length of the straps and they stay put unless you adjust them. As to the bag itself, don't overload it - keep the weight down to a minimum for this bag for sure - the canvas is not super thick or heavy duty (and as a result, the bag itself weighs very little which is nice). The quality of the canvas, straps, cinch for the main pouch, and buckle for the "pencil case" flap are good, but the zippers are cheap. If they were beefed up or actual YKK, I would have given 5 starts for quality, but all things considered, this is a great bag to throw your hiking essentials in and just grab-and-go to a trail head. Recommended.
