History of the M65 Field Jacket

When it comes to military history, this classic jacket has a lot of it. First introduced in 1965 and worn by our U.S. troops for decades, the improved design features of the M65 jacket made it the replacement for the M-1951 jacket (which had replaced the M-1943 jacket). Each jacket is made from high-quality materials by leading manufacturers in the industry. The classic design of our army field jacket with a liner is now updated with many color options. It includes a removable liner option, packable hood, water-repellent fabric, and four pockets.

When you need to stay warm, dry, and comfortable, you can’t go wrong with the classic M65 jacket for your outerwear from Army Surplus World.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main differences between the M-51 and M-65 field jackets?

Though both military jackets feature four pockets and were made to be waterproof layering pieces, they’re quite different. Unlike the M-51, the M-65 has a built-in hood that can be stowed away, which is a great feature for rainy conditions. The M-65 also typically has internal buttons to allow for the addition of a liner and Velcro fasteners to secure the cuffs of the jacket.

What’s the purpose of an army field jacket?

During World War II, the military first designed field jackets to keep soldiers warm and dry. They had aimed to create a new piece of outerwear that wouldn’t sacrifice utility and offered more protection and functionality while in use. There have been many iterations, including the M-1943, worn primarily during WWII, the M-1951 during the Korean War, and the iconic M-1965, which was widely worn during the Vietnam War. Though phased out by the military, civilians still wear the M65 field jacket and its predecessors today, looking for their function and style.

What are the primary features of the M-65 jacket?

These army field jackets are constructed using a cotton, cotton-nylon, or nylon-cotton sateen fabric blend to be water repellent and feature four pockets: two on the waist and two on the chest. They also have adjustable hook and loop cuffs and an adjustable drawstring waist for customization to the wearer. One of the most notable features of this jacket is its packable hood that can be stored away in the collar. It can be worn with or without a liner for added warmth.
