Why are they called dog tags?
Some believe that it’s because they look similar to the metal tag on a dog’s collar. Another rumor is that World War II draftees called them dog tags because they were treated like dogs. However, according to the Army Historical Foundation, the term was first coined by newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst to undermine support for FDR’s New Deal. After hearing the newly formed Social Security Administration was considering giving out nameplates for personal identification, Hearst referred to them as “dog tags” like those used in the military – and the name stuck!
