Military ribbons and medals can be awarded to military members for various reasons. They can recognize one’s accomplishments, heroism, or gallantry. These distinctions are used as a means to honor outstanding service and actions.
How are military ribbons worn?
Generally worn on the left side of the chest, ribbons are placed on one’s uniform in order of precedence from right to left. Put simply, the ribbon of the highest precedence gets placed closest to the heart of the wearer.
If more than one row of military medals and ribbons is required, those with the highest precedence should be worn on the top row.
Can military awards be worn on civilian clothing?
It is permissible for veterans and retirees to wear their awards on their civilian clothing for military-themed gatherings. On significant holidays, such as Veterans Day, Memorial Day, and Armed Forces Day, veterans are encouraged to wear all of their military medals and ribbons.
When worn, they should be placed in approximately the same location as they would on their military uniform.
