This is a side plate pouch for the Soldier Plate Carrier System, SPCS, that is used by the US Military. It attaches via MOLLE which allows it to work with many different carriers. The SPCS was used extensively in the later years of the war in Afghanistan, and was a lighter alternative to the IOTV, more or less replacing it in use. The SPCS is the military designation for the KDH Magnum TAC-A1 plate carrier, and was chosen due to offering the best ballistic protection as well as the lightest weight of the carriers tested. It is also widely reported as being more comfortable than the IOTV.
This is a component designed specifically for the SPCS, but many IOTV components, such as the lower back and groin protector, are compatible with the SPCS. The plate is held securely with a hook and loop flap, and this pouch is intended for Enhanced Side Ballistic Insert, ESBI, plates. There is also a separate pocket on the inside for soft armor. Overall this is a great upgrade to your plate carrier, issued or otherwise, to facilitate the protection you need.
