29/01/22 - (late 90's-early 2000's) Woodland Camo Genuine USGI Issue Poncho Pros: I have owned all USGI ponchos from the vietnam era and a wide selection of, shall we say, 'commercially rated' civilian ponchos since 1977. I must say this one is by far the best there is, IMO. Mine is estimated to be early 2000's, when, from what I've read, they stopped making ponchos for the US military. The rip stop nylon material while impregnated for water repellance, is not laminated. So you dont have to worry about heavy delamination with age. In addition to the ponchos universal uses, the thing I like the most about this poncho its its durability. This poncho is made from a thickish guage fabric (rip stop nylon) that simply desemates the civilian market, including the hype comming from 'USGI Industries', which despite being made in USA, have nothng on this poncho, believe me I've owned 2 of them - their HYPE! Next is the hardware and features. It has that thought through military thoroughness of all you need and nothing you don't. Cons: Extremely difficult to find. You have the issue of trying to eliminate broad search terms from your searches such as, 'military style', 'USGI', etc which make searching for surplus next to impossible sometimes. Extremely difficult to obtain. OK say you find one, if your not in the US, like I'm not, even more difficult to obtain, as you must see if they will post to you and then there are th costs and whether you run the gauntlet of choosing cheaper shipping methods and it disappearing. Then you have the COVID nonsense delaying delivery times and again more of a chance it will go missing. Next to these 2 challenges you have condition issues. Many are now old and from the 80's or even 70's and havent boded well with storage. Issues include, being stored wet, a powder residue some are stored in not comming off or being toxic. Seam sealer. It wasn't taped it was applied and this can turn yellow, crack and come off. This isn't too much of n issue as you can re-seal it, BUT the more cracking and flaking residue you have on there the more difficult it will be to re-seal properly. I generally noticed the cooler the climate it is stored in the better and if its in it sfactory zip lock back even better - mine was and sealing was still excellent after 20+ years, which is very rare. Frauds: In addition to the aforementioned challenges, you now have authenticity to deal with, seller honesty and naievety - do your research on this. Now too colour/pattern: This woodland camo is fairly universal, but multicam you be icing on the cake, but hey, it didn't exist in its production era, so given woodland is universal I must cut it some slack here also. Sure the weight is there about 750grams, but again for its intended purpose I don't really see this as a con personally. If I could offer you any help in these seemingly daunting challenges its be patient, network and keep looking. How did I find mine? Sheer luck. It took about 1 year. And I was the least person who could get one and I did and its literally in 'as new' condition, which I didn't think was possibel from the very few ones, I have seen! A seller I had asked about one that sold virtually immediately contacted me, rare I know, but very courteous indeed.
